A Coffee Stop on Soi Ploenchit 5, Lumphini, Bangkok

After lunch in Pathum Wan we went looking for coffee and found Boat Coffee and Friend, a café built into the garage in front of someone's house on Soi Ploenchit 5. No sign worth noticing. You walk past it or you don't.

The owner is a craftsman. Plants climbing every surface, wood cut and placed just so, tools hanging where they belong. The whole space felt like something he'd been tinkering with for years, not for anyone in particular, just because leaving things unfinished isn't in his nature. It had the feel of sitting in someone's living room, except the living room faces the street and serves iced coffee for under a hundred baht.

It was packed when we got there. Workers from the neighborhood on their breaks, regulars who didn't need to look at a menu. Nobody was performing anything. People were just drinking coffee in a place they liked.

I had my Hasselblad 500 C/M with me. I asked the owner if I could take his photograph and he agreed without looking up from what he was doing. I took one frame, from behind, while he worked. The Zeiss Planar 80mm and one frame. Sometimes that's the more honest picture. A person at rest inside a thing they built.
